I absolutely LOVE Halloween! Although, I’m kind of a wimp when it comes to gory movies…but I love everything else! Every year we watch It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, Nightmare Before Christmas (yes, it’s a Halloween movie), Hocus Pocus, and whatever else we can fit in. We are looking forward to watching the new Haunted Mansion movie on Halloween night!
Along with movies, there’s also lots of great choral music out there that really goes with the spirit of Halloween. And while I like Halloween movie music, or pop/contemporary music that’s geared towards Halloween, today I’m sharing with you my favorite choral music that’s great for putting you in the Halloween spirit! Have a listen to some of these great works while you enjoy some apple cider (or some leftover candy from trick-or-treating đŸ™‚
This one has been one of my favorites ever since it was part of our All-State music a number of years ago. It’s creepy and aggressive, and really gives you a jolt!
Daemon Irrepit Callidus, Gyorgy Orban
I programmed this a number of years ago with my chamber choir, and for years after that, we would pull out the music and sing it on Halloween. Nothing like demons to get you in the Halloween mood!
Double, Double Toil and Trouble, Jaakko Mantyjarvi
From the witches’ scene in Act 4, Scene 1 of Macbeth, in this piece the singers use unusual sounds to create the supernatural scene. Super Fun!
The Ghost’s Story, Dominick DiOrio
Ghosts are creepy. This piece for choir and marimba totally fits. Well done Dominick!
Hexenlied; Mendelssohn/arr. Neal
More witches, this time celebrating! LOVE the piano accompaniment on this one!
More spooky than scary, this one tells the story of two mischievous stars dancing in the sky. Check out the video above for a cool performance of the piece!
I saved the creepiest one for last! Tim loves horror movies, and this one is 100% creepy. If you love to be scared on Halloween, this is one for you!
Enjoy everyone, and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
